The six-season television show and newly-released film centres around four successful women from New York City. The 30-something girls, portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie), Cynthia Nixon (Miranda), Kim Cattrall (Samantha) and Kristin Davis (Charlotte), are best friends on a serious manhunt. In between cocktails, pedicures, and shopping for designer shoes, they embark on a never-ending quest for stability. These independent women reflect the ideal big-city life lived well. But
after years of enjoying that lifestyle, Marian Jordan wound up finding
it unfulfilling.
“I was living the Sex and the City lifestyle that was supposed to make me happy, but it didn’t,” says Jordan, who shares her story in her book Sex and the City Uncovered (B&H Publishing). “I fed my aching soul with booze, boys, and shopping and kept trying to pacify my hurts. All those things were just Band-Aids and I continued to need more and more of them.” Although Jordan grew up with loving parents, she tells Living Light News she had an insatiable need for love and acceptance from the outside world. She also truly believed that ‘things’ had the power to make her happy. Jordan points to the moral climate of the 1980s, an era where materialism and the decline of traditional values was reflected in every form of entertainment. “When Madonna is your role model at age 12, that tells you where the culture is,” she says. Perhaps that’s why she is so passionate about the message in her book. In one episode from season three Charlotte memorably states, “Women just really want to be rescued. I’m sorry but it’s true. I’ve been dating since I was 15. I’m exhausted. Where is he?” Through Jordan’s eyes, her book sheds a realistic light on the single woman’s search for belonging, security, and unconditional love. “In my book, I address that question by showing how the ultimate rescue is found in the Bible. “When you take away the Manolo Blahniks (designer shoes), Cosmopolitans, and never-ending string of love interests, the Sex and the City lifestyle only leads to disappointment and disillusionment,” says Jordan, who recently completed her master’s degree in Biblical Studies. “Look past the glamour and all you see is four women looking for love in all the wrong places, hiding their scarred hearts with designer clothes and desperately attempting to fill a void in their lives.” For Jordan, the desperation that once overwhelmed her no longer exists.
Now, she has found true contentment and credits her faith in God and His son Jesus Christ for her transformation. Several years after that day, Jordan felt compelled to write a book about her experiences. She hoped her story might shed light on the most fulfilling relationship there is — one with Jesus Christ. It was also important for Jordan to deliver the good news that Jesus is the true healer of broken hearts and lives. Soon after Jordan began writing Sex and the City Uncovered, one of her friends sent several of the chapters to a publisher. The company was so enthused about the book, they published it immediately and also signed her to a five-book contract. Jordan followed up the release of her book with speaking engagements at college campuses and churches. She has also appeared on popular television programs. Along with her writing and speaking, Jordan is the founder of Redeemed Girl Ministries (www.redeemedgirl.org) in Houston, Texas. Through the organization, she aims to share the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ. She also desires to lead women to the great peace, joy, and abundance God offers everyone — no price tag attached. “My message is for the women of this generation,” says Jordan. “Christ wants them to be whole and He wants to set them free. And He meant it when He said He came to give us life abundantly. “I followed the way of the world and look where it got me. But now He is my everything and not only are all of my needs met, but I have more peace and joy than I ever imagined.” Photo courtesy Redeemed Girl Ministries
